AECOM, officially established in 1990, has roots extending back over a century. Its origins trace to the Swiss Drilling Company, founded in Oklahoma in 1910 by J. Fred Miles. After relocating to Kentucky in 1915, Miles formed the Swiss Oil Company, which later evolved into Ashland Oil & Refining Company under the leadership of Paul Blazer. In 1985, a management buyout led to the creation of Ashland Technology, which, through the merger of five entities, became AECOM in 1990.
As a publicly traded company listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol ACM, AECOM’s ownership is predominantly institutional.
Approximately 76.76% of its shares are held by institutional investors, with major stakeholders including BlackRock Advisors LLC (10.23%), Vanguard Fiduciary Trust Co. (9.654%) and PRIMECAP Management Co. (8.581%). Insiders own about 0.52% of the company’s stock, while the remaining shares are held by public companies and individual investors.
Throughout its history, AECOM has expanded through strategic acquisitions, enhancing its capabilities across various sectors. Notable acquisitions include engineering firm Maunsell, urban planning and sustainability practice EDAW and quantity surveying and construction consultancy Davis Langdon.
These expansions have solidified AECOM’s position as a global leader in infrastructure consulting, offering services that span architecture, engineering, construction management and environmental services.
